(1) F W BUCKMAN TO J G KEPPLER DATED AUGUST 10, 1983 SERIAL 23902 1

(2) R C DEYOUNG TO J W COOK DATED MAY 19, 1983 This letter provides a partial response to IE Bulletin 83-05.

Consumers Power Company has determined that no pumps which are used in safety-related systems in the Midland Plant and are original equipment, were manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Company (HTPC). However, Consumers Power Company has determined that spare parts for several pumps used in safety-related systems at the Midland Plant were procured from HTPC. These spare part procarements were initiated following Hayward Tyler's acquisition of the B&W Canada pump Company.

The pumps involved, their service application and associated HTPC spare parts has'been tabulated and transmitted as proprietary information in referenced-letter (1). This-information is being treated as proprietary per the NRC follow-up letter, reference (2) above.

CPCo is presently evaluating whether the additional cost associated with testing the limited number of spare parts affected is justifiable.

Specifically, CPCo is essessing whether replacement of the affected spare parts is more cost effective than the required additional testing of them.

Depending on the results of this study, CPCo will either replace the parts in question or propose an acceptable testing procedure for NRC approval.

CPCo plans to submit a complete response to Bulletin 83-05 for the Midland Plant by December 12, 1983. This date is consistent with Bulletin 8300190352 830810 PDR ADOCK 05000329 G
