Letter from L. J. Callan, Acting Associate Director for Projects (NRC-NRR) to G. R. IIorn dated December 21,1993, " Request for Additional Information Regarding Generic Letter 92 10 CFR 50.54(O" Gentlemen:

.On December 17, 1992, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 92-08. This generic letter contained requested actions and reporting requirements regarding the qualification of Thermo-Lag fire barriers and the basis for ampacity derating factors employed for cabling protected by Thermo-Lag barriers. In Reference 1, the Nebraska Public Power District (District) submitted, under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.54(0, its response to the requested actions contained in GL 92-08. The NRC evaluated this response and has requested, in Reference 3, the District to submit additional information pursuant to 10 CFR 50.54(0. This letter provides the response to the NRC request.

l At the time of the L)istrict's initjal response (Reference 1) to GL 92-08, the District informed l

the NRC that three installations of Thermo-Lag 330-1 remained in place at Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS). Two of the installations were in the Cable Spreading Room and one installation was in the Cable Expansion Room. All three of the installations served as non-rated radiant energy shields, which formed the bases for Appendix R exemption requests in these areas. In a letter to the NRC dated May 6,1993 (Reference 2), the District informed the NRC that the two non-rated radiant energy shields, located in the Cable Spreading Room, had been modified and the Thermo-Lag 330-1 material in question had been removed.

Subsequent to this correspondence, the District has modified the remaining non-rated radiant energy shield in the Cable Expansion Room and the Thermo-Lag 330-1 material in question has also been removed.

As of February 3,1994, there are no fire barrier installations at CNS which utilize Thermo-Lag 330-1 material. All of the barriers in question have been returned to operable status. As a result, the additional information requested in Reference 3 is no longer applicable to CNS.
