@ Consumtis power James W Cook Vice President - Projects, Engineering and Construction General offices: 1945 West Parnell Road, Jackson, MI 49201 + (517) 788-0453 April 13, 1983 Harold R Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 MIDLAND NUCLEAR C0 GENERATION PLANT MIDLAND DOCKET NOS 50-329, 50-330 UNDERGROUND PIPING MISSILE PROTECTION FILE: B3.5 SERIAL: 22010 Supplement No 1 to the Midland Plant Safety Evaluation Report, Section 3.5.2, states that the diesel fuel oil lines between the underground diesel fuel oil storage tanks and the Diesel Generator Buildine are not buried at sufficient depths to provide adequate protection from externally generated missiles.
In lieu of this, the NRC Staff required the applicant to formally document the missile protection to be furnished for these lines and have the protection-barriers in place prior to issuance of the operating license.
To comply with the Staff's requirements, we have documented that the missile barriers will be provided over the diesel fuel oil lines in Revision 47, fable
.3.5-11 of the Midland FSAR.. Engineering design drawings providing for the concrete tornado-missile shielding'have been issued to the Construction Department and will be implemented prior.to fuel load.
We believe the actions described above meet the Staff's requirements on this' issue.
