Dear Mr. Herring:

Additional strut pin testing was initiated at'the Wm. H. Zimmer Nuclear Power Station by the attached record of conversation. The record of conversation, dated 3-18-83, was between K. Herring (NRC) and J. B.

Vorderbrueggen (CG&E) and was concerning high lead content of one strut pin

.(RH 197SR pipe end). Based on this record of conversation CGSE obt.ained approval to perform additional testing on units supplied on MR# 26666 (attached). Approval was obtained via CG&E letter JCH-82-L27 dated 3-18-83 (attached).

This effort has now been completed and the following test results and other documents are provided for your information: ,.

1. Metcut Research Associates, Inc. report No. 1912-35224-1C dated 3-21-83. Chemical analysis for lead content of non-heat coded pins.

' This included two (2) pins found on the Reactor Building floor and the clevis end pin from RH 1975R. A Total of twenty-two (22) pins were analyzed in the group.

2. Metcut Research Associates, Inc. report No. 1912-35244-2 dated 3-22-83. Physicals and complete chemicals of the pin from RH 139SR pipe clamp.

3. Bergen Paterson letter dated 3-21-83. Concerned material test reports for struts pin material.

Seve'n (7) of the twenty one (21) supports listed on the MRf 26666 have been cancelled removed from the field and returned to spares. The pins from these units were unable to be located in the short response time requested.

1 Based on further discussion with K. . Herring (NRC), J.B.- Vorderbrueggen (CG&E) and F. S. Hoovar (CG&E) no further action is required at this time. ,

Bergen Paterson has reviewed all 'P.O.s' for barstock from late 1972 thru mid 1976 and no 4140L material wa's specified. They will review the receiving reports to determine if any was ever received in house.

K. Herring requested that additional pins be tested for % lead content to determine if 41401. material was su'pplied on other units.

J. 3. Vorderbrueggen stated that additional pins will be removed from comoonents shipped with the support containing the defective pin (RH197SR, 126666), material samples will be machined from each pin and an analysis .

for % lead. The results will be discussed on 3-21-83 at 8:30 a.m.
