Gentlemen:
I DOCKET 50-301 REOUEST TO USE ASME SECTION IX CODE CASES 2142 AND 2143 POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 2 The purpose of this letter is to request approval in accordance with 10CFR50.55a(a) (3) for the use of Inconel Alloy 690 type weld filler materials in the fabrication and installation of the Point i
Beach Nuclear Plant, Unit 2, replacement steam generators.
These Ni-Cr-Fe weld materials have been approved by ASME Section IX on i
November 25, 1992 and have since been published in Code case 4
Supplement #3.
The materials for Code cases 2142 and 2143 are designated as UNS N06052 and UNS W86152, respectively.
The materials have been classified as F-No. 43 for weld procedure and performance qualification purposes.
ihe UNS W86152 filler material is a match for the shielded metal l
arc weld process and UNS N06052 is the companion for bare filler used in processes like gas tungsten arc welding.
EPRI publications show that both materials have improved corrosion resistance'for Alloy 690 weldments as compared to currently approved materials-(N06082 and W86182).
Both new materials-are the preferred choice i
i l
for welding applications involving Alloy 690 in a corrosive I
environment.
These materials provide additional levels of quality-and safety because of their superior corrosion resistance over
)
present materials.
i Please note that the Westinghouse design specification 412A72 dated June 1, 1994, for the Delta 47 replacement steam generators references the use of the code cases 2142 and 2143 in fabrication.
