B ALTIMORE G AS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY P.O. BOX 1475 B A LTI M O R E. MARYLAND 212o3 NUCLEAR POWER DEPARTMENT CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PL ANT LUSBY. M ARY LAND 20657 March 21, 1983 Mr. Ronald C. Haynes, Director Docket No. 50-318 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission License No. DPR 69 Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406
Dear Mr. Haynes:
In accordance with Technical Specification 6.9.2 we are submitting the following special report describing a Fire Protection System event.
On February 6, 1983, at 2045, during normal full-power operation, a fire alarm was received for the South East Containment electrical pene-tration area. It was immediately verified that no fire existed in the area and the fire detector was declared inoperable (T.S. 3.3.3.7).
Pursuant to the Technical Specfications the Containment temperatures were recorded every hour.
Investigation revealed the conductors of the Protecto Wire had shorted together, actuating the fire alarm. Protecto Wire is made by Fire Protection System Grinnell'Co., model #ACR-1600-HD. The short was located at a point where the Protecto Wire was pulled tightly across the edge of a cable tray. Normal tray vibration eventually caused the wire insulation to wear through.
Repairs were made per manufacturer's directions, the alarm cleared and the detector was declared operable at 2035 on March 6, 1983.
Should you have any questions regarding this report, we would be pleased to discuss them with you.
Very truly yours, L. B. Russell cc: Director, Office of Management Information and Program Control Messrs:
