As discussed with R. J. Clark of your staff, we are hereby requesting an exemption from the test interval requirements of 10 CFR 50, Appendix J for Browns Ferry unit 1.
Unit 1 is currently scheduled to shut down for the cycle 5 refueling outage on April 15, 1983 As shown on the enclosed list, a number of isolation valves are required to be tested by April 11 or April 12, 1983 Therefore, the scheduled shutdown date of April 15 would cause us to exceed the maximum two-year test interval specified in Appendix J.
We are requesting an extension to the Appendix J two-year test interval for the enclosed list of valves from April 11 until May 6, 1983 This is the date expiration begins on the next series of valves and will allow unit 1 operation to continue past April 15, 1983 in the event of unscheduled delays in the shutdown date. This extension request is necessitated by the extemely long torus outages (unit 1, cycle 4-174 days; unit 2, cycle 5-234 days) and the resulting changes of cycle startup and end dates to avoid simultaneous multi-unit outages.
We request approval of this exemption request as soon as possible, but no later than April 8, 1983 Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
