Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 NRC Region II Inspection Report No. 50-348/83-02

Dear Mr. O' Reilly:

The subject inspection report transmitted on March 10, 1983 discusses the review and disposition of Inspector Followup Item (IFI) 348/81-05-02 entitled " Pressurizer ISI Indications."

The report correctly stated that "during the current outage the indications were re -ex ami ne d.

The inspectors reviewed the record of the re-examination and discussed the matter with the licensee's cognizant plant engineer.

The licensee's findings were that the indications showed no growth."

However, the report then stated that "this item will remain open for followup by Region II in review of further examinations to be performed by the licensee at the next refueling outage."

This statement does not accurately describe Alabama Power Company's intended disposition of these indications as discussed during the audit.

Alabama Power Company reported the disposition of these indications to Region II by Mr. F. L. Clayton's letter of February 21, 1983.

Thi s report provided the re-examination results, characterization of the indications and an evaluation of results.

In conclusion, this report stated that " based upon the re-examination data which showed no significant change from the previous data and the acceptability of the uncorrected indication dimensions under the construction Code requirements, Alabama Power Company considers this item complete and no further action is required."

The information reported was consistent with the discussions held with the NRC inspectors during the inspection of January 31 through February 4,1983.
