ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e), ITEM E-16, GE HFA RELAYS W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO.-956C, E-16 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition reported under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (e) . Our last report on this matter was submitted on April 12, 1983 (LOZ-83-0014).

Since our last report, Construction Work Authorization Request (CWAR) 174 was submitted to the NRC to perform the corrective actions, replacement of the HFA Relays in BOP safety related systems and replacement of the coils in safety related NSSS systems. Since that time, the corrective action for the NSSS relays has been revised to require replacement of the entire relay.

The CWAR was disapproved by the NRC because the staff felt that replacement of the relays would be new construction which would violate the NRC November 12, 1982 " Order to Show Cause and Order Immediately Suspending Construction" (CLI-83-33). However, the NRC staff stated that if the relays were in operating systems and their failure could jeopardize other equipment, the relays i could be replaced. CWAR 174 is being revised to indicate the l systems in operation and it will be resubmitted for NRC approval.

Replacement and testing of the HFA relays in the remaining safety related systems will be accomplished upon approval under the NRC's " Order to Show Cause and Order Immediately Suspending Construction". A projected schedule for the completion of these corrective actions will be submitted at that time.
