MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT DOCKET NO. 50-263 LICENSE NO. DPR-22 Additional Response to I.E. Bulletin No. 81-03 Northern States Power Company personnel conducted an investigation at the Monticello Nuclear Plant for evidence of the presence of the asiatic clam, Corbicula Sp.
The investigation included searching through the spoils removed from the intake bays during the 1982 refueling outage and the spoils from the intake grating.
Also investigated were the cooling tower lower basins.
There were no asiatic clams found in any of the areas.
Although no evidence of the asiatic clam was found at Monticello, a program to periodically check the areas mentioned above, as well as the river itself, has been initiated.
Procedures have been revised to assure an inspection for the asiatic clam is performed when debris is removed from the condenser water boxes.
It is felt that these measures will insure early detection of the asiatic clam, as it affects the Monticello Plant.
The NSP Environmental Regulatory Activities Department, along with the plant personnel, are investigating potential, environmentally sound measures for controlling the clam when and if it enters the Monticello systems.
