Georgia Power Company (GFC) hereby submits the following information in response to NP.C I&E Bulletin 83-03, cated March 10, 1983. The subject bulletin - pertains to check valve failures in raw water ecollng systems of diesel generators. '
Item 1 Licensees are requested to review the plant pump and valve in-service test IST program required by Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and modify it if necessary to include check valves in the flow path of cooling water to the diesel generators from the intake to the discharge.
Response
l Pursuant to the requirements of I&E Bulletin 83-03, the IST programs for i Hatch thits 1 and 2 were reviewed. It was found that the IST programs did
! not include the check valves in the diesel generator plant service water cooling water lines. Unit I has check valves 1P41-F552A and IP41-F552C in l the cooling water discharge lines of the 1A and 1C diesel generators,
- respectively. The Standby Diesel Service Water Pump, which supplies the i
18 diesel generator, has check valve 2P41-F321 at its discharge. There are no check valves in the cooling water systems for the 2A and 2C diesel generators on Unit 2. A review of the past maintenance history on the subject check valves revealed no significant trends or failures on check valves 1P41-F552A and C. Check valve 2P41-F321 has had a history of the disc sticking and the bonnet leaking. Maintenance has been required in the past to replace various internal parts of check valve 2P41-F321.
Item 2 For the valves described in Item 1, licensees are requested to examine the IST program and modify it if necessary to include verification procedures that confirm the integrity of the valve internals.

The three check valves in question will be visually inspected to verify valve integrity. Any necessary modifications to the IST program will be determined later pending the results of the valve internals visual inspectio,1.
