Service Water Pump Lubricating Water Strainer Clogging (SD-33), dated March 31,1983..

Dear Sir:

Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 3 Reporting of Potential Significant Deficiencies in Design and Construction: Service Water Pump Lubricating Water Strainer Clogging (SD-33)

In Reference (1), Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) reported a potential significant deficiency as required by 10CFR50.55(e). The deficiency involved clogging of the service water pump lubricating water strainers, which if left uncorrected could lead to failure of the pump bearings.

Following the recommendation outlined in Reference (1), NNECO will install new strainers of increased mesh size and replace the existing shaft sleeves with a harder sleeve material. These corrective actions are to be completed by late fall,1983.

NNECO considers these corrective actions sufficient to resolve this significant deficiency. Therefore, this letter constitutes our final report closing out all items related to SD-33. We trust the above information satisfactorily responds to your concerns.

Very truly yours, NORTHEAST NUCLEAR ENERGY COMPANY IM W. G. Counsil Senior Vice President kh 0 00 d
