NUCLEAR OPERATIONS Docket No. 50-358 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road 1

Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Attention:

Mr. J.G.

Keppler Regional Administrator Gentlemen:

RE:

WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50. 55 (e), ITEM E-20, INADEQUATE CABLE TRAY HANGER INSPECTION W.O.

57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, E-20 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition initially reported to the Commission on May 3, 1982, as a potentially reportable deficiency under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (e).

Our previous report LOZ-83-0025, dated April 29, 1983, reported that a sampling inspection program would be developed to establish the reinspection criteria necessary to meet our commitment of 100% reinspection of accessible cable tray hanger and conduit support welds.

A reinspection program submitted by Sargent & Lundy will be made available for NRC review af ter CG&E has accepted the program and prior to implementation.

The reinspection plan will utilize a sample visual inspection program, nondestructive and i.

destructive testing to analyze hanger weld quality.

The results of this analysis will establish new inspection criteria for weld quality acceptance.

In support of this program a Construction Work Authorization i

Request (CNAR) has been approved to remove coatings from the sample lot, so that the visual inspection portion of this proposed program can proceed.

A follow-up report describing our progress in the area will be submitted by October 10, 1983.
