Dear Mr. Denten:
This letter provides additional details concerning the ccatro]
of heavy loads during the construction of Byron and Braidwood stations when new fuel assemblies are being stored in the spent fJel pit.
In the attachment to reference (a) we incicated that weight of heavy loads to be handled in the fuel handling building would be limited to 15 tons because the main crane hook would be removed until construction was completed.
A
. temporary load path in the vicinity of the spent fuel pit was also identified.
The failure of a reactor coolant pump at Byron 1 necessitates revision of these commitments.
In order to handle a reactor coolant pump integral assembly weighing 23 tons the main hook and lower load block on the Fuel Handling Building crane must be reinstalled.
The pump will be placed on the permanent load transport rails and moved along the south end of the spent fuel pit.
Such use of this load path has been previously reviewed by the NRC.
