O PSEG Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Nuclear Department June 7, 1983 Mr. James M. Allan, Acting Administrator Region 1 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Allan:

IE BULLETIN 83-03 CHECK VALVE FAILURES IN RAW WATER COOLING SYSTEMS OF DIESEL GENERATORS SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS.-l AND 2 In response to the subject Bulletin, PSE&G has reviewed its pump and valve test program and has identified the following check valves associated with each diesel generator as being affected.

Salem Unit 1 Salem Unit 2 11 & 12 SW34 21 & 22 SW34 11 & 12 SW36 21 & 22 SW36 11 & 12 SW38 21 & 22 SW38 11,12 & 13 SW44 21,22 & 23 SW44 11 & 12 SW47 21 & 22 SW47 These check valves are covered by Salem's pump and valve testing program and their operation is verified every ninety (90) days.

There have been no problems with these valves.

In accordance with Item 2 of the Bulletin, we have considered various test methods to verify the integrity of the valve internals, and we have elected to conduct radiographic examina-tions of the internals with the valves in place. These examina-tions will be conducted during each refueling outage.

The Unit 2 valves identified above were examined radiographi-cally during the current outage, and the integrity of the internals of each valve was satisfactory. Initial radiographic examinations on Unit 1 valves will be conducted during the next refueling outage, currently scheduled to begin in August 1984.

The results of this inspection will be submitted to the NRC within 90 days of completion of the test.
