This is to inform you of our intent to make use of ASME Code Case N-340 at our Byron and Braidwood generating stations.

copy of the approved Code Case is attached.

This Code Case was approved by the ASME on June 17, 1982.

It provides alternate rules for examination of weld edge preparation by ultrasonic examination of a completed weld.

It is requested that the NRC acknowledge acceptability of this Code Case for immediate use at Byron and Braidwood generating stations.

One signed original and fifteen copies of this letter and the attachment are enclosed for your use.

Case N 340 Alternative Rules for Examination of Weld Edge Preparation Section 111, Division 1, Classes 1,2, MC, and CS Inquiry: What alternative rules may be used in lieu of the reiluirements of NB/NC/NE/NG-5130 for the exam-ination of weld edge preparations for Section II, Division 1 Classes 1,2, MC, and CS construction?

Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee tliat, an an alternative to the surface examination requirement for weld edge preparations of NB/NC/NE/NG-5130 for Sec.

tion III, Dhision 1, Classes 1,2, MC,and CS construction, the completed weld may be ultrasonically examined pro-vided that:

(1) Ultrasonic examination shall be performed in accordance with NB/NC/NE/NG-5110. The ultrasonic examination acceptance standards in NB/NC/NE/NG.

5330 shall apply. In addition, loss of back reflection shall be r. basis for rejection.

(2) Nondestructive examination personnel shall be igualified in accordance with NB/NC/NE/NG-5500.

(3) The ultrasonic examination procedures shall be progen by actual demonstration to the satisfaction of the Authorized Nuclear Inspector.

'(4) Use of this Case is limited to ferrous materials.

(5) This Case number sitall be identified in the Data Hrport for the ite ns to which this Case applies.
