Dear f!r. Chairman:
I am writing to request your assistance and participation in addressing the scientific and economic issues surrounding the debate over the future of the proposed nuclear powerplant at Shoreham, currently under construction by the Long Is, land Lighting Company.
Upon my review of this matter, I am convinced that before a decision can be made about the fate of this facility, there must be more clearly defined, reliable, and objective information, especially regarding the economic costs and safety of Shoreham.
To this end, I have announced the establishment of a Fact Finding 6
Panel on Shoreham.
In order to assure the fullest possible examination of the facts and consequences of various actions, I propose that this Panel be comprised of representatives of State, local, and federal governments.
The Federal government has a history of extensive involvement in commercial nuclear power generally and with Shoreham particularly.
Your agency is charged with specific responsibilities in this regard, and your experience and expertise can constitute a valuable resource for this Panel.
Accordingly, I am requesting that you designate an appropriate reprsentative to participate with state and local representatives on this Panel.
