This letter providas information concerning a rexnt incident at Wolf Creek Geaetating Station involving the educational qualification of a KG&E Quality Control Inspector. This matter was disc 2ssed on May 2,1993, between Messrs. Rathbun and Maynard of my staff with you and members of your staff.
Recently a KG&E Quality Control Inspector working in the Wolf Creek Oper-aticas Quality Control organization voluntarily advised his supervisor that he had not graduated from high school as stated on his employment application. The individual was formally disciplined and his certification, which was based in part upon completion of high school, was revoked.
The individual involved was a Level II receipt inspector it.,alved with receipt inspections and disposition of material received reports (MRRs).
Wolf Creek Operations has reverified his work by reviewing 100% of the MRRs and approximately 50% of the receipt inspections processed by this individual and found no discrepancies in his work. The individual has since completed his high school education and has now been recertified.
KG&E investigation of this incident revealed that routine background investigations only verify education levels above high school. Because completion of high school is a requirement for some positions, KG&E has now directed its background investigation contractor to routinely verify for all new employees the highest education level completed down to and including high school. Completion of high school is not verified if completion of a higher level of education is verified.
