As described below, Suffolk County has become aware of new i
information, which may be relevant and material to the adjudi-cation of the County's motion to file a new contention concerning i
the emergency diesel generators at Shoreham.
This information may also have potential' safety significance and be relevant generally to the licensing proceeding for Shoreham.
On Thursday, May 19, 1983 at approximately 8:00 p.m.,
the Suffolk County Executive received a telephone call at his home from a person identified only as an employee of LILCO.

. The caller said that Shoreham emergency diesel generator no.
103 has passed tests with a cracked engine block, and the NRC is not aware of the crack.
According to the caller, the crack is in the area of the camshaft bearing support; LILCO attempted to grind out the crack, but it was too deep and therefore LILCO decided the crack is " normal" for the cast iron casting of the diesel.
Because the foregoing is relevant to the diesel generator testing apparently being witnessed by NRC Region 1 personnel, a copy of this document is being sent directly to Region 1.
