TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY CH ATTANOOGA. TENNESSEE 37401 400 Chestnut Street Tower II July 27, 1982 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

In the Matter of the

)

Docket Nos. 50-259 Tennessee Valley Authority

)

50-260 50-296 By letter from D. B. Vassallo to H. G. Parris dated February 12, 1982, we were requested to provide additional information regarding the need for chlorine detectors at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. The concern over chlorine is related to NUREG-0737, Item III.D.3.4, Control Room Habitability.

The most recently available (1979) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data on barge freight traffic passing the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant site (Tennessee River mile 294.0) does not indicate that chlorine is transported past the site. In addition, chlorine gas is no longer stored or used at the Browns Ferry site. Therefore, there is no threat to control room habitability from any identifiable source of chlorine, either on or off site.

This response completes our action on NUREG-0737, Item III.D.3.4.

Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY. AUTHORITY L. M. Mills, Manager Nuclear Licensing Subscrib d gd sworn be ore me this 2.*___dayof.
