Arkansas Nuclear One - Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. 50-313 and 50-368 License Nos. DPR-51 and NPF-6 Drawing Control Program Progress Report (File:

3300,2-3300)

Gentlemen:

On September 30, 1981, AP&L provided you with a status report (0CAN098110) and a description of our plans in the area of drawing control.

This letter provides the status of efforts and a description of progress made in this area.

As previously stated, our philosophy concerning drawing control is that it encompasses preparation, reproduction and distribution.

Specifically, our Drawing Control Program has been addressing the timeliness of distribution, quality of reproduction, the large backlog of "pending" design changes, and the long delay in the generation of as-built drawings.

Since our September 30, 1981, letter we have diligently pursued the program described and have accomplished the following:

1.

Extensive renovcd cn of the onsite building has been completed.

2.

Plant Engineering, Drawing Control and Drafting have been consolidated into one group and are now housed in the renovated building.

3.

Reproduction and drafting equipment has been received and is in use.

4.

Required procedural changes have been completed.

5.

The mylar drawings have been relocated to ANO.

June 30, 1982 As indicated in our September 30, 1981, letter, the schedule which we had established was very tight and contingent on several activities being completed on time.

Several things have occurred to influence our progress.

The most notable are:

1.

Rather than a bulk transfer of the mylar drawings to ANO, the transfer was required to occur over a period of several months with several hundred drawings being transferred each week.

2.

We have been unable to acquire the full compliment of draftsmen originally planned for this project.

3.

The concurrent outage on both units this spring severely hampered our updating efforts due to the required outage support.

4.

Two draftsmen have been diverted from their normal duties for several weeks in support of AP&L's response to 10CFR50 Appendix R.

We have, however, been concentrating on those drawings most often used by Operations personnel and to date have updated and issued approximately 1,000 drawings.

Because of the age and condition of the mylar, many of the mylars were required to be completely redrawn.

To date we have redrawn approximately 50 drawings requiring from 30 to 70 manhours each.

Those drawings that have been updated and issued represent a significant improvement over the drawings previously used.

With regard to the timeliness of issuance of as-built information, we are continuing to evaluate the entire design change closeout process and have made several changes to improve the timeliness of the closeout process.

We have not, however, fully attained the desired result and are evaluating further changes which can be made to ensure that drawings are as-built in as timely a manner as possible.

We will continue to keep the resident inspectors informed of our progress on this issue and will provide you with another status report in approximately three months.

Very truly yours, f

ohn R. Marshall Manager, Licensing JRM:s1 a
