May 19, 1983 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention:

Ms. E. G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Ret McGuire Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-370

Dear Mr. Denton:

Duke Power Company described actions that would be taken regarding recent problems with the DS-416 reactor trip breakers in a letter dated May 10, 1983.

As part of that' action, Duke committed to limic operation of Unit 2 to zero power physics testing until receipt of the NRC Staff's Safety Evaluation Report on the reactor trip breakers. On May 17, 1983 the NRC issued the Safety Evaluation Related to McGuire 1 Reactor Trip Breakers.

Inasmuch as the Unit 2 breakers are identical to those employed on Unit 1. Duke considers that the above commitment has been met and operation of Unit 2 may commence subject to the limitations of the current license on that unit.

Please advise if there are any questions regarding this matter.

Very truly yours, W
