Dear Sir:

This Special Reoort is submitted in accordance with LaSalle Vait 1 Ooeratina License NPF-11, Appendix B, Technica' Speci fications 3.7.5.1 and 6.6.c.

During the period of this Specia l Report, (April 19 to May 10) the 0A Diesel Fi re Pump was inoperable and taken out of service in accordance wi th Technical Specification 3.7.5.1 Back up fire protection was maintained at alI times by the avallabi1ity of the OB Diese1 Fire Pump.

On April 19, 1983, the OA Diesel Fi re Pump was taken out of service in order to perform a 2 year maintenance inspection.

Following the 2 year inspection on April 23, the Diesel Fire Pump was then run for the Maintenance Department to veri fy the diesel was running within speci fications.

The diesel ran fine and was turned over to the operating Department.

On April 24, 1983, the Operating Department ran the Diesel Fire Pump, in accordance with LOS-FP-W2 (DFP survelliance) during the surveillance, smoke was observed to be coming out of the valve covers. The diesel was then shutdown and maintenance was notifled of the problem.

Upon investigation, i t was dete rmined that there was extensive internal damage and that the diesel required replacement.

Following installation of the new diesel, a test run was performed by maintenance to ensure that the diesel was running within specifications and tolerances.

The 0A Diesel Fire Pump was returned to service May 10, 1983, following the satisfactory performance of LOS-FP-W2 The original 0A Diesel Fire Pump is being shipped to the Manufacturer so that the cause of failure can be determined.

At this time, both fire pumps are available for Operation.
