4417 PULLER ORIVE KENSINGTON. MARYLAND 20895 May 11, 1983 Nunzio J. Pallidino, Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Co==ission 1717 H Street, N.W. Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Mr. Pallidino:

I an contacting you on behalf of the Citizens for Nuclear Reactor Safety, Inc. -a group of people from Montgomery County

     ' particularly concerned with the licensing and operation of the Air Force Radiobiology Research Institute's nuclear reactor facilities.

This nuclear reactor is located in the heavily populated Bethesda area and is already twenty years old. It'is my' understanding that reactors of this typa are usually only licensed for a thirty year period. However, AFRRI's license renewal request seeks an additional twenty year authority. Additionally, the renewal also requests an increase in the reactor power at the facility. Because I live in the Kensington area, just north of this reactor, I a= acutely aware of the fact that there are schools, nursing homes and a large number of residential houses located immediately adjacent to this particular facility. I share the concern of the members of CNRS who desire very careful consideration of this license renewal request and believe that citizens living in the area should be given every opportunity to have their views included in the decision making process. I would appreciate your carefully reviewing this matter and keeping me informed on the progress of these renewal proceedings. I am particularly concerned that specific steps be taken to ensure the safe oper'ation of this nuclear facility. Sincerely, , NM{L"A _ _; y c. , C Mary lo'ergers ' MB:ds s cc: Elizabeth French, CNRS 39 830517 U hK05000170 PDR}}
