Byron Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Site Hydrology NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-455

Dear Mr. Denton:

This is to notify you of an apparent error in the FSAR analysis of accidental releases of radioactive liquids to groundwater at the Byron Station site.

This preliminary notice is being provided to alert you to forthcoming FSAR l

changes which could alter the NRC's analyses of accidental releases.

As a result of a re-evaluation of the two pump tests for the Galena Platteville aquifer referenced on page 2.4-31 of the Byron /Braidwood FSAR, the ungrouted rock transmissivity values should be an order of magnitude higher.

Higher transmissivities are also supported by published literature values for the same aquifer in northern Illinois.

To further verify the applicability of the re-evaluated transmissivities, other test results describing the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer are being reviewed.

Appropriate changes to the Byron /Braidwood FSAR will be provided as soon as possible.

It is expected that this will take about a week.

Very truly yours,

k. fNW T.

R.
