SUBJECT:

Unrestricted Area Limits For Radioactivity in Oil

Dear Mr. Collins:

recent conversations with Mr. G. L. Plumlee, III of your During release of staff, we were advised that per Region IV the limits for oil to unrestricted use are taken to be identical to the unrestricted limits for water, i.e. Appendix B, Table II, Column 2 to 10CFR 20.

It is our understanding that if oil contains radioactive material within the above limits, it may be released to ur. restricted use without further regard for NRC regulatory requirements, as long as the requirements of other agencies, e.g.,

Colorado Department of Health, EPA, etc., are adaered to.

Based on the above guidance, oil containing radioactive material within the values of Appendix B, Table II, Column 2, to 10CFR 20 will be released to unrestricted use. This policy will be implemented 30 are advised otherwise days from the date of this letter, unless we from your office.

Very truly yours, Judwck blh5$
