WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e) ITEM M-61, FIRE PROTECTION PIPING SUSPENDED FROM ESSENTIAL CABLE TRAY SUPPORTS DOCKET NO. 50-358, CONSTRUCTION PERMIT NO.

CPPR-88, W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. NRC-8 Gentlemen:

This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition initially reported to the Commission on October 13, 1982 under the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).

As stated in our previous report, QA-2103, dated November 8, 1982, the Grinnell Fire Protection Systems Company of Providence, RI, contractor for Fire Protection (FP) system piping, originally installed the FP piping in the Cable Spreading Room as non-seismic components. Work on this piping began in August, 1977.

In September, 1977, CG&E reached the conclusion that the piping should be seismically supported with appropriate quality controls applied to the installa-tion.

System modifications included rerouting of piping to accommodate seismic supports from essential cable tray hangers. The scope of the original Grinnell contract did not require a quality assurance program, therefore, Grinnell instal-led the rerouted piping with temporary supports. Meanwhile, several Design Docu-ment Changes (DDC's) were generated to require the principal constructor, H. J.

Kaiser Company (HJK) to add the necessary additional supports.

Sirce these sup-ports were classified "non-essential," the modifications were not subject to a documented design review by Sargent & Lundy Engineers (S&L).

CG&E has reviewed the Corrective Actions taken and has determined that an audit of this reply is required. This audit is ex-pected to be completed and the results analyzed by April 15, 1982, at which time a report will be submitted, j

We trust the above will be found acceptable as an interim report under 10CFR50.55(e).
