Subject:

interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Reactor Mode Switch Failures (#73)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This interim report on reactor mode switch failures has been prepared to provide the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. H. Wescott of NRC Region III by f Detroit Ediscn's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, on July 1, 1982.

The switch was frozen in one position, and could not be placed in other rode selections. In addition, scrne of the contacts would not traintain their position during operation. For exa:q)1e, a "normally open" contact for the mode selection would incorrectly remain closed when the switch was I:cved from one position to another position. The switch has been modified, under the direction of General Electric, and found acceptable. Additionally, qualification work is required for the switch handle. This work is presently ,

in progress.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent on or before March 24, 1983. If you have questions concerning this Inatter, please contact Mr. G.M. Trahey, Assistant Director - Project Quality Assurance.

Very truly ywrs, DAW /DF/cp i
