VA 22W3-2442 8(4-924 7136 FAX 804 9S2-2634 The University of Virginia (UVA) Reactor Facility hereby submits for NRC approval a proposed change to the UVA Reactor Facility Emergency Plan. The following change in wording of section.8.6, subsoction (3), page 50 was reviewed and approved by the UVA Reactor Safety Committee on January 18, 1991:

Pronosed Wordincr:

Portable radiation monitors, including dosimeters, dedicated for emergency use and stored in the emergency lockers will be checked for operability quarterly and calibrated annually. Appropriate records of these checks and calibrations will be maintained.

Current Wording:

Portable radiation monitors, including dosimeters dedicated

-for emergency use will be inspected and checked for operability quarterly and calibrated at least semi-annually.

Rationale:

Discussion with the most recent NRC inspector to come to the

. Reactor Facility for an announced inspection of UVA's emergency preparedness indicated that applicable Regulatory Guides and ANSI Standards suggest-a yearly calibration period for portable radiation instruments. UVA adopted a yearly schedule for it's everyday-use meters several years ago, but the Reactor Facility

-has been locked into the semi-annual requirement by the wording

-in the Emergency Plan. -Changing the emergency instrument calibration interval to yearly will bring the Reactor Facility into-line with~the rest of the University. This change was suggested by and acceptable to the inspector.
