  • No9 ember 9,1982 Docket Nos. 50-348 50-364 Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Regional Administrator U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II, Suite 3100 101 Ma rietta St reet, N.W.

Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 IE Bulletin No. 82-01, Rev. 1, Supplement 1 Alteration of Radiographs of Welds in Piping Subassemblies

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Alabama Power Company has reviewed radiographs furnished by ITT Grinnell for piping assemblies received at Farley Nuclear Plant during the period specified in the subject bulletin.

Two assemblies were found to have altered radiographs on a total of three welds.

The 4T penetra-meter image on each of the twelve (four per weld) films appeared to have been darkened with a lead pencil or another similar substance on one side only.

Paragraph 2 under Action to be Taken by Licensees provides that "In those cases where the specified penetrameter sensitivity is not discern-ible or is apparently enhanced in any manner, as by the methods dis-cussed, weld quality interpretation may be based on the equivalent or higher penetrameter sensitivity discernible on the film sets.

For example, for those radiograph sets for which the required 2-4T penetra-meter sensitivity is not discernible, or found artificially enhanced on visual inspection, film interpretation of weld quality may be based on the presence of discernible 2-2T or 2-1T sensitivity exhibited by the radiographs."

The altered radiographs were interpreted based on the presence of discernible 2T sensitivity and found to exhibit acceptable weld quality.

New Non-Destructive Examination reports have been generated for these welds and placed on file.

If there are any questions, please advise.

Yours ly, agkve L/
