AN UNUSUAL DISCHARGE - NORTH ANNA POWER. STATION

Dear Mr. Kregloe:
On Friday, January 18, 1991, it 'was discovered that an unusual discharge had taken place _ on Tuesday morning, : January 15: 'at approximately 7.a.m.
Immediately after-learning'of the incident,.
the circumstances were described to you and this letter' confins that telephone conversation on Friday r)rning.
The unusual discharge consisted of approximately 110,000 gallons q
of make-up water, which was discharged-to Ja. storm drain that empties into-the discharge canal ~ via-Outfall _004. : The ---make-up _
water, produced by the Reverse Osmosis system,4 Was stored in a tank i
that required maintenance. Water was drained in order.to clean and paint the:inside of the tank.
Maintenance personnel have received instructions that the discharge of' any
- water, however clean,. cannot be discharged without authorization -from the
-Virginia Water-Control Board.
The-feasibility of indicating this prohibition on the, storm drain. grate itself is being evaluated.
No adverse environmental impact was observed as-a result of-this inci' dent. None. would be expected in light of the ! nature of' the discharge. If you have -any questions regarding the:: incident, please -
