2) Letter of 1/21/83 from ELJordan, NRC, to GLKoester, KG&E Subj: IE Bulletin 81-03

Dear Mr. Collins:

Reference 1) transmitted Kansas Gas and Electric Company's (KG&E) response to IE Bulletin 81-03 concerning " Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety System Components by Corbicula SP. (Asiatic Clam) and Mytilus SP. (Mussel)."

Reference 2) requested additional information concerning KG&E's response to Item 4a of the Bulletin. Item 4a asked for an evaluation of the potential for intrusion due to low water level and high velocities in the intake structure expected during worst case conditions. This letter provides the requested information.

The preventive measures for controlling the intrusion of Corbicula were outlined in Reference 1). These measures included the use of chlorine dosing and temperature shock to restrict the entrenchment of this clam in any of the WCGS safety systems. The use of screens or filters to exclude Corbicula juveniles would require extremely small mesh size (<10 mm). At this time, KG&E uses a standard 3/8 inch mesh metal screen to protect the circulation water intake pumps. This screening would be somewhat effective in preventing intrusion of adults. Currently there are no plans to place any small filters or screens at Wolf Creek Generating Station. During worst case conditions (e.g. Icw lake levels and high water velocities), the intrusion potential would remain very low due to the preventive measures stated above.

The statements above are based on the supposition that Corbicula is present in the Wolf Creek Cooling Lake.

During the past ten years of ecological monitoring on Wolf Creek and the Neosho River, Corbicula has never been found.

-Mr. John T. Collins KMLNRC 83-032 March 21, 1983 It has never been found in that part of the Neosho River drainage which lies in Kansas. Although the possibility of Corbicula becoming established in the Neosho River is feasible, the time factor involved could be quite long.

If you have any further questions concerning this matter, please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

Yours very truly, [
