Dear Mr. Jordan:

Your January 21, 1983 letter to Mr. J. W. Gallagher forwarded a request for additional information concerning our previous response to I.E. Bulletin 81 Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety Components by Corbicula SP. (ASIATIC CLAM) and Mytilus SP. (MUSSEL).

Your request is restated below followed by our response.

Response

As discussed in our letter of May 22, 1981 (J. W. Gallagher, PECo l

to B. H. Grier, NRC) the velocity profile at the intake structure minimizes the potential for intrusion of these organisms into the l

cooling water systems.

Routine surveillance tests are performed l

on the emergency service water and high pressure service water i

systems to determine flow blockage situations.

this, the following monitoring program was instituted in the fourth quarter of 1981:

1)

PONAR dredge samples are taken at Stations 601, 602, 605, 608, 610 and 611 located in Conowingo Pond.

2)

A quarterly survey is performed along a portion of the shoreline inside the discharge canal.

This is a visual survey of undisturbed substrate (wading) and, depending on water clarity, may include substrate sampling and sieving, etc. on site.

3)

During the spring, summer and fall sampling of the large shallow area in the vicinity of Burkins Run will be done.

4)

On the limited occasions when the pond elevation is sufficiently lowered (such as is done in anticipation of high influent rates) attempts will be made to survey the exposed shoreline in the discharge canal and along the west bank from Burkins Run upstream to the discharge canal.

Testing as described above has already been accomplished with no indications of Corbicula sp. or Mytilus sp. present.

This testing program shall continue and, unless the presence of these organisms is revealed, there is no need for further action.
