I NUDOCS Microfiche i
Program Begins for Power s

t, m
(
The NRC 1.PDR staff had been aware for some time that 'he size of the 3
E 1.PDR collections in many libraries was becoming a burden to already 0
overcrowded shelves. Several years ago, m an effort to stop the growth of 7.
the paper collections and still make information on the neatby nuclear fa-cihty available to the local public, the staff began considering the feasibil-ity of converting the I.PDR collections at power reactor I.PDRs from paper based collections to NUDOCS microfiche based ones.
llased in part on the favorable results of the NUDOCS pilot project begun at six LPDR libraries in 1988 as well as on input from 1.PDR librarians and g
l fi patrons, the staff recommended the conversion of power reactor LPDR j
g collections from paper to NUDOCS microfiche.

^
NRC senior management approved the conversion and a notice was pub-lished in the federa/ Register (55Fil2241W on June 1,1990, of the Agency's y
decision to distribute NUDOCS microfiche to the power reactor LPDRs y
instead of paper doct..acnts.The microfiche program was put in effect on
~,
July 1,1990. At that time, the 76 power reactor LPDRs began receiving 4
weekly shipments of NUDOCS microfiche, rather than paper-copy docu.
E ments. One LPDR will continue to receive paper documents as well as l
t j
microfiche until completion of the current licensing hearing.

.5, The NUDOCS microfiche contains t.l! NRC publicly available docu-ments. 'this means that as of July 1,1990, the same documents that are available in the NRC's main Public Document Room in Washington, DC, are available at each power reactor LPDR on NUDOCS microfiche.
'ihe conversion to microfiche affected only the libraries sening as LPDRs for proposed and operating commercial nuclear power reactors. Libraries

Power reactor LPDRs that also maintain an 1.PDR collection for a low-le.el waste or fuel cycle facility wil, find these documents on the 9
