Subject:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units Nos.1 & 2; Dockets Nos. 50-317 and 50-318 TMI Action Plan Item II.D.1 Gentlemen:

Three Mile Island Action Plan (NUREG-0737) Item II.D.1 addresses performance testing of reactor relief and safety valves. Testing supported by the nuclear industry through the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has been completed, and we have received a report on the results of that effort. We are conducting an evaluation of the test data to determine what actions, if any, are appropriate for implementation at Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2.

Based on a preliminary evaluation of the data, we are confident that the safety and relief valves will function as designed at Calvert Cliffs. Mo/

tions, if any are required, can best be implemented on a deliberate schedule.

We plan to submit our final, plant-specific report per Item II.D.I.2.b no later than March of 1983 for Unit I and no later than November of 1983 for Unit 2.

Modifications, if required, will be scheduled for the Fall,1983, outage of Unit I and for the Spring,1984, outage of Unit 2.

Only limited block valve testing has been performed and the final report on this effort has not yet been received. Based upon delivery of the report before the end of l

1982, we plan to addrese Action Plan Item II.D.I.3 by completing and submitting a plant-specific evaluation of our block valves, based upon the available data, by the end of January,1983.

Very truly yours, t

,, m H. H. Miller for A. E. Lundvall, Jr.
