Purpose:

The purpose of this meeting is to continue dialogue on recommendations contained in the Nuclear Energy Institutes white paper on Spent Fuel Performance Margins dated November 8, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML19318D971). This workshop will build upon discussions held during the January 22, 2020, public workshop (see summary at ADAMS Accession No. ML20028F277) and will focus on two technical areas: thermal margins and source terms. The goal of the workshop is to align Regulatory Issue Resolution Plan (RIRP) documents for the associated recommendations. The RIRP documents will establish a detailed list of next steps, including planned future interactions, and a milestone schedule. Where possible, the workshop will also discuss preliminary technical details developed as part of actions on specific recommendations.

On March 25, 2020, industry will present the topic of Thermal Margins, specifically their Recommendation IV-3 in the white paper. As part of the presentations to staff, industry will provide an overview of its plans to develop a best practices guide for thermal modeling approaches.

On March 26, 2020, industry will present the topic of Source Terms, specifically their Recommendations III-1 and III-2 in the white paper. As part of the presentation to staff, industry will provide an overview of its plans to develop a conservatism roadmap to illustrate source term assumptions and conservatisms utilized today, including burnup uncertainty conservatisms. The NRC will discuss Recommendation III-3, which pertains to conducting a less detailed review when additional conservatisms are included.
