HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1, 2 I&E BULLETIN 80 REQUIRED MODIFICATIONS Gentlemen: As a result of our evaluation in response to NRC I&E Bulletin 80-11, pertaining to masonry wall design, certain walls at Plant Hatch required modification because of calculated local stresses above code allowable stress during certain seismic events. Wall C164-4A and B, located in the control room, was to be removed by September 17, 1982 in lieu of modification as indicated in a letter from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission dated August 16, 1982. Delays in completing the new shift supervisor's office have caused delays in commencing construction in the area of wall C164-4A and B. The delays in the control room modification preclude removal of the subject wall by September 17, 1982. Also, to remove wall C164-4A and B at this time would violate Technical Specifications regarding the fire rating of the control room since prior to removal of that wall, a three-hour-rated fire wall must be in place around certain portions of the existing return air duct. Control room wall C164-4A and B will be removed by December 15, 1982. Georgia Power Company regrets this unforeseen delay in the removal of the subject control room wall.
