Dear Mr. Chilk:
U As counsel for Consumers Power Company in the above-captioned matter, we ask that you bring this letter to the attention of the Commissioners in connection with their consideration, pursuant to the Commission's Order of April 10, 1978, of the status of the construction permit proceedings in this docket.
In January, 1977, during the Midland Plant suspen-sion hearings, Consumers Power presented testimony concerning the Company's predicted future demand for electric power for the next ten years.
Since that time Consumers Power has, in accordance with its policy of revising forecasts on a regular basis, adopted new forecasts of short-term and long-term electric demand.
These actions were reported by counsel for the Company to the appropriate NRC tribunals.*
As a result of the latest short-term forecast update, Consumers Power has adopted an interim update of the January, 1978 long-term forecast.
The new official forecast predicts average annual increases in the Company's electric Letter of Caryl A. Bartelman to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board dated Septe:.ber 16, 1977; letter of Caryl A.
Bartelman to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Board dated January 31, 1978.

power peak demand of 3.6 percent annua'.ly in the period 1978-1982, 3.7 percent annually in the period 1978-1987, and I
3.2 percent annually in the years 1978-1992.
The correspond-ing figures in the January, 1978 long-term forecast were 4.4 percent per year, 3.6 percent per year and 3.1 percent per year, respectively.
Thus the newly revised forecast shows a decrease in demand in the early part of the forecast period and a slight increase in demand during the later years.
Consumers Power's peak demand for electricity is now predicted to be 5130 MW in 1981 and 5310 MW in 1982; the previous estimates were 5350 FN and 5580 MW, respectively.
The next regularly scheduled long-term forecast update is due to be completed by January, 1979.
