HENDRICK HUDSON SCHOOL DISTRICT JOSEPH E. HOCHREITER ENRIQUE CATALAN Superintendent of Schools Assistant Superintendem for Business LAURA G. NEIER MARGARET RULLER, Ed.D. LISA SCHUCHMAN Executive Director of Executive Director of Executive Director of Educational Support Services Curriculum and Instruction Pupil Personnel Services February 7, 2020 Secretary Annette L. _Vietti-Cook US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington DC 20555-0001 Attn: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff Re: Docket NRC-2020-0021

Dear Secretary Vietti-Cook:

I write to request the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) both extend the public comment period for the license transfer application of the Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC) by Entergy Nuclear Operations to Holtec Decommissioning International, LLC from thirty days to sixty days, and hold a local public hearing regarding this application.

Moreover, as Superintendent of Schools of the Hendrick Hudson School District, I am separately asking Holtec to make a local public presentation to answer the community's questions regarding its decommissioning proposal. Specifically:

  • How will decommissioning impact the safety of educating over 325 students in the Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School, located less than one mile from Indian Point?
  • How will decommissioning impact the safety of more than another 1,200 students attending schools within two miles of Indian Point?

I believe a longer public comment period and a local public hearing are essential components of the NRC's regulatory and oversight responsibilities. I also believe Holtec must be responsive to these safety questions and concerns as they relate to children.

We appreciate the NRC's consideration of this request for a 30-day extension of the public comment period and local pub7ic h aring regarding this application.

Thank you.
