DOCKET 50-255 - LICENSE DPR I PALISADEST PLANT - DEGRADED METEOROLOGICAL DATA TRANSMISSION f

CAPABILITY l

This lette:r is being sent in response to a request for information from Mr Axelson of your staff concerning the degraded data transmission capability l

of the meteorological instrumentation at the Palisades Plant as a result of a lightning strike. This event did not affect any other plant system or result in a degradation of the Emergency Plan at the Palisades Plant site. This letter is being sent for information purposes only since we have determined, i

after reviewing the Palisades Plant Technical Specifications and the applicable Federal Regulations, that this occurrence was not a reportable event.

On Saturday, July 17, 1982, at approximately 0300 hrs, lightning struck the meteorological tower at the Palisades Plant site. The lightning strike destroyed the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter used to convert weather data transmitted to the control room and the Technical Support Center (TSC). The A/D converter was repaired by the vendor and placed back in service at 1900 hrs.on July 29, 1982. During the outage, weather information was obtained from Weather Service International (WSI), the primary meteorological data backup system. Had the need arisen, weather information was also available from the FAA weather station at Benton Harbor, Michigan. Furthermore, oc0882-0002a142 8209000623 020902 9
