(a) BECo. Ltr. #81-37 dated February, 11, 1981 "Information in Response for NUREG-0737 January 1, 1981, requirements" (b) BECo. Ltr. #82-91 dated March 25, 1982.

Dear Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to provide a status of Boston Edison Company's (BECo.) implementation of the NRC's NUREG-0737 item II.K.3.13 requirement that the "RCIC System be modified so that the RCIC System will restart on low water level." As stated in reference (a) BECo. has committed to implement the following:

1.

Replace present solenoid oil dump valve with electro-mechanical trip device.

2.

Logic modifications to effect automatic closure of the steam supply valve on high vessel level rather than the tr.ip valve.

The trip valve would stay open throughout the high level trip.

Our planned implementation date to complete this modification, as we previously advised in reference (b), is the next scheduled maintenance outage of sufficient duration (8 days).

Implementation of these modifications is sufficient to satisfy the intent of the NUREG item.

In reference (a) we advised that we were also investigating the installation of a motor operator on the trip valve replacing the handwheel. The purpose of this modification would be to provide remote reset capability of the trip valve, 1

thereby, achieving auto-restart capability of RCIC following a protective trip (e.g. overspeed). We have concluded that this modification is fersible and desirable and have initiated procurement actions with Terry Corporation to l

l obtain the necessary hardware. Due to procurement difficulties with the vendor j
