51tsheger 3ttatitttle RADIATION SAFETY OFFICE TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE ALABAMA. 36088 August 31, 1982 Mr. Cecil Thomas, Chief Standardization and Special Projects Branch Division of Licensing Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 RE: License R-122 for Tuskegee Institute AGN-201 reactor
Dear Mr. Thomas:
This is a formal request for authorization to dismantle our AGN-201 reactor (License No. R-122).
The fuel for the AGN-201, which had been on loan to Tuskegee Institute from DOE, was shipped to the Y-12 Plant at Oak Ridge on July 1,1982. Receipt there was acknowledged on July 8, 1982.
In addition to authorization to dismantle we would like to:
(1) terminate our license (R-122).
(2) dispose of the remaining reactor components in several different ways including holding onto some of them and possibly shipping the body of the vessel to a salvage company. (We can measure no radiation above background in the vessel, the console or any of its components).
(3) hold onto the fission plate that we have (28.8 grams of U-235, 20%
enriched U) for possible use with our neutron generator. Can we hold that plate with a different license or must we send that to Oak Ridge also before our present license can be terminated?
(4) avoid the extra work of preparing an emergency plan for the reactor since we have already shipped the fuel and are applying to dismantle the system.
We would appreciate your consideration of the above points and response to them.
