Dear Mr. Denton:

Enclosed is a list of ASME Code Class 2 piping welds (Enclosure "A") which will be included, via an upcoming revision, in Shoreham's Pre Service Inspection (PSI) Program Plan. These 175 welds have already been ultrasonically inspected in accordance with our commitment in letter SNRC-604, dated August 20, 1981.

The completed examinations of the 175 welds show that all the welds are acceptable, i.e., no rejectable indications were detected as a result of this inspection. Detailed data sheets of the examination results are available at Shoreham, as always, for review as you deem appropriate.

Six (6) of the welds examined as part of this augmented inspection of Class 2 components did not receive a complete examination. For these six welds, a small portion of the weld was obstructed due to piping geometry (typically proximity of the circumferential weld to a sock-o-let) resulting in a small percentage of the weld being classified as "not inspectable." Due to the small percentage of the weld which could not be inspected and considering the success-ful completion of construction inspections, we have concluded that this situation will have no impact on safety. Further, our review of the most recently approved Editions and Addenda of the ASME Code Section XI indicates that these welds would net require UT examination for Inservice Inspection. Therefore, although the j300l precise Inservice Inspection Program Plan for Shoreham is not yet in place, we do not anticipate that these six welds will require UT for Inservice Inspection.

Enclosure "B" is a list of the six welds which did not receive a complete examination along with a reason for the incomplete exami-nation and a definition of the extent of the examination actually completed.
