NRC Inspection Report 87-36, dated

+

January 4, 1988, from L. J. Callan, NRC, to B. D. Withers, WCNOC

Subject:

Docket No. 50-482: Clarification of Activity Described in NRC Inspection Report 87-36 Gentlemen:

This letter clarifies an activity described in the ' Reference.

The l

Reference provided the results of an ;NRC inspection - pertaining-to-portions of the_ radiation protection. program.

Specifically, the inspectiori documented that on November 9,

1987, low level radioactive.

4 material, which consisted of ventilation ductwork, had been delivered to the Cof fey County Landfill from Wolf Creek ' Generating Station ' '(WCGS).

I During a follow-up sur. rey of the. landfill, it was also discovered that a plastic trash bag containing two disposable cloths with low ' level

~

contamination had been delivered to the 1andfill.

t The Reference states that "The licensee..' agreed to perform radiation' surveys of the landfill. 'The licensee also agreed to' include the Coffey.

County landfill on their routine radiation survey schedule.

The landfill will be surveyed on a weekly basis to begin with and providing no additional licensed material is found after 'a period may be reduced to a' monthly basis."

i The performance of radiation surveys at the Coffey County Landfill-have been discontinued.

This is based on the fact that WCGS began shipping-

" clean" waste from the Radiological Controlled Area (RCA) to a vendor in' l

September - 1991, to be surveyed and buried in an industrial -landfill.

't Also, no other low level' radioactive material has been discovered at the

}

1andfill since the original discovery.

[Page'2of2 The activity described 'in the ' inspection ' report was based on the' j

assumption that " clean" waste from the RCA was going to be buried in the.

J Cof fey County Landfill.

However, since " clean" waste from-the RCA is being ' handled by a vendor and has not been sent to the Cof f ey. County Landfill since September 1991, surveying of the-landfill at least monthly is considered to be an unnecessary use of company resources.
