Unirn Electric Comp:ny R. A. McAlcerfan 1901 Gratiot Street . (314) 554-2175 FOR IPJfEDIATE RELEASE August 18, 1982 Union Electric Company announced today that completion of its Callaway

~~

nuclear power plant will be delayed until late 1984 or early 1985. The plant had been scheduled for completion in early 1984. .

"The exacting nature of the remaining work en the plant, coupled with j extrsmely rigid quality requirements has increased our projection of -l 1

the craft and technical support man-hours necessary to cornplete the )

i project," Union Electric Board Chairman Charles J. Dougherty said. l "The increased scope of the remaining work and the resulting delay in ,

completion of the plant wf11 increase its cost from $2.1 billion to

$2 85 billion. Direct costs of the plant will increase from $1.4 billion to $1.8 bfillon. Carrying charges on the investment in the plant will increase from $700 million to $1.05 billion. Carrying charges are added to the cost of the plant because of the inability to include plant under construction in the rate base and amount to 37% of the total cost of the plant," Dougherty said.

"Although delay in the completion of the Callaway unit will result in less than optimal power reserves in 1984." Dougherty said, "the Company anticipates that adequate alternettve power sources will be available to meet the area's power needs."

.N-N(H'E: A news conference will be' held at 2:00 p.m. today (August 18).

l Hr. Dougherty will be available to answer media questions concerning this release. The conference will be held at Union Electric's General Office Building,1901 Gratiot Street. St. Louis.

Those attending should park on the West side cf the building and enter thru the West lobby.
