20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Containment Design
Dear Mr. Schwencer:
The design of the Perry free standing steel containment was described to members of the Structural Engineering Branch (SEB) in several meetings and correspondence during the Perry FSAR review. At the time the final design of the containment building was not complete. The main reason was that the design for the "New Loads" requirements had not been finalized. Although we had described the design of the addition of the concrete in the annulus area between the steel containment and the concrete shield building, we stated that the additional concrete would not be designed to ASME Division 2 requirements.
As a result of final design calculations and minor construction problems of the containment shell, we have decided to evaluate the design of the annulus concrete to meet the requirements of ASME Division 2 to take credit for the strength it supplies to the containment shell. The results of this evaluation showed no physical changes are required to meet the ASME Division 2 requirements. A description of this design is attached.
This design has been reviewed by the State of Ohio, a representative of the ASME National Board, and the local ANI representative, and has been accepted. In order to meet our procurement and construction schedule, we must proceed in a timely manner. It is requested that you review this design and inform us of your findings.
