DE6TP NJK-82-347 ML OL FILE L August 6, 1982 Mr. Carl Paperiello, Chief Emergency Preparedness and Program Support Branch U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region til 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137

SUBJECT:

Quad-Cities Nuclear Power Station Units One and Two Emergency Exercise Assembly Drill NRC Docket Nos. 50-254 and 50-265

Dear Mr. Paperiello:

The purpose of.this letter is to request NRC approval to conduct the site assembly portion of the scheduled August 24, 1982 Emergency Exer-cise as a separate drill to be conducted in advance of the Exercise.

This scheme would be similar to that which was employed last year, prior to the May 20, 1982 Exercise for Quad-Cities Station.

To conduct the assembly drill as part of the August 24, 1982 Exercise

[

would create difficulties for the Station, in that final preparations for the Unit One Refueling Outage would be underway at that time. The outage is scheduled to begin following unit shutdown on September 5.

1982. Also, the scheduling of the separate assembly drill would permit the Station to more effectively use its manpower during the Exercise, especially during the_ critical first hour following event initiation, s

l The conduct of a separate assembly drill from the Emergency Exercise was a positive aspect of the exercise last year, in that it~ increased the effectiveness of the persons taking part in the exercise.

l This item was discussed previously with Senior Resident inspector N.

l Ch ri ssot imos.

It is proposed that the assembly drill-be conducted i
