a ENCLOSURE (1)
REPLY TO APPENDIX A OF NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-317/81-17; 50-318/81-16 Effective August 26, 1981, the handling of Spent Radioactive Resins was addressed in Radiation Safety Procedure (RSP 2-204), " Packaging, l.abeling, and Shipment of Radioactive Material."
On April 7,1982,' a change to this procedure was made incorporating, " Resin Shipment Worksheets" as an aid in determining Specific Activities, Activity Concentrations, and Total. Activity. The worksheet is filled out with each shipment and includes information on quantities of ingredients used and weight of shipment. In addition, once per ten shipments, a sample of non-radioactive resins is processed using the same solidification ingredients to study such factors as set-up time, quality of ingredients, and possible residual water.
It is acknowledged that RSP 2-204 has not received POSRC review. All revisions to this procedure have been reviewed by the Plant Superintendent and all, changes to this procedure have received approval by the Radiation Safety Section Supervision and/or Staff. However, by August 13,1982, Calvert Cliffs Instruction (CCI)-805, "Calvert Cliffs Radiation Safety Procedure Format", will be changed to reflect the requirement for POSRC review.
RSP 2-204 will be upgraded to include sign-offs for the resin solidification process control procedure and the latest revision with incorporated changes will be submitted for POSRC review. Full compliance will be achieved by September 3, 1982.
