SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION WATER STORAGE AT COWANESQUE RESERVOIR POWER UPRATE EVALUATION

- CCN 741326 FILE R9-3 PLE-17494

Dear Mr. McSparran:

Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is planning on uprating electric generation at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SES) by approximately 5%. This uprate will take  !

place over a two-year period (Unit 2 - 1st quarter 1994 and Unit 1 - 2nd quarter 1995).  ;

Because of this modification we estimate that water withdrawal will increase by 3.6%

and consumptive use by 3.1%. i Based on the agreement between the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC)  !

and PP&L about 16,000 acre feet of water are available for low flow augmentation to  !

PP&L at the Cowanesque Reservoir. Approximately 11,000 acre feet are needed as an emergency water supply for present Susquehanna SES consumptive use.  :

Conservatively the emergency supply for the station is estimated to increase by about  !

400 acre feet to 11,400 acre feet once both units are uprated. Therefore, no additional water storage capacity is required for the Susquehanna SES. -

i PP&L will continue to provide Susquehanna River water withdrawal and consumptive use data annually in order to meet the recordkeeping and reporting requirements of SRBC Resolution No. 91-2, May 9,1991. After both units are uprated sometime by the . l end of 1995 we will have data to better determine the actual increase in consumptive j water use. _l l
