Marsei:les, Illinois 61341 Telephone 815/357-6761 August 6, 1982 Mr. James G. Keppler Regional Administrator Directorate of Regulatory Operations Region ill U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137
Dear Sir:
This Special Report is submitted in accordance with LaSalle Unit 1 Operating License NPF-II, Appendix B, Technical Specifications 3 7.6 and 6.6.C.
On July 9, 1982, an inspection was conducted by the Station Fire Marshal to ensure all fire rated doors complied with the designed fire ratings as specified in LaSalle FSAR Vol. 11 Appendix H.
A discrepancy in the fire rating for door
- 299 was noted. To protect personnel and equipment the Station Fire Marshal declared the door inoperable.
Immediately following the inoperability, an hourly fire watch patrol'was established in accordance with the action statement of Technical Specification 3 7.6 to patrol af fected areas.
In addition, the location of door #299 is such that it is visibly seen by the Control Room operator 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
per day.
During the period of this Special Report, general area fire protection and detection systems should be-available and operable in accordance wi th the action _ statement of Technical Specification 3 7.6.
In Accordance with 10CFR 73 55 (c)(6) and LaSalles FSAR Vol.11 Appendix H, door #299 must be bullet proof tested and have a 3-hour fire rating. As installed, door #299 is a 10' high, double wide door that separates the Control Room (fire zone 4Cl) from the Auxiliary Building ~ hallway area (fire zone 4C3). These doors are bullet proof tested but do not have the 3-hour fire rating.
Since the present door is not available in both bullet proof and 3-hour fire rating a modification was initiated to install a U.L. approved,. 8' high, double wide door that complies with both requirements referenced above.
Door engineering, acquisition,'and installation will be_ completed by one of the methods as specified by License condition 2.C. 25.d.
